Fresno Police Arrest Suspect in Hit-and-Run Death of Elderly Man
FRESNO, CA — “On Sunday, September 13, 2026, at approximately 8:24 pm, the Fresno Police Department received calls regarding a vehicle versus pedestrian hit and run collision at McKinley Avenue and Normal Avenue. When officers arrived, they located a pedestrian on the roadway and unresponsive. Despite lifesaving efforts from officers, EMS, and fire personnel, the pedestrian was declared deceased on scene.
Through the investigation, detectives determined that the 78-year-old male pedestrian had been pushing a cart across McKinley Avenue when he was struck by a vehicle traveling westbound.
With the help of an Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) detectives were able to identify the possible suspect vehicle. Officers then located the suspect vehicle abandoned in the neighborhood northeast of the collision scene. The vehicle had been covered with tarps and secured with rocks taken from a neighboring residence. The vehicle had physical evidence and a damage profile consistent with striking a pedestrian. The vehicle was impounded as evidence.
Detectives were able to positively identify 30-year-old Mariah Irion as the suspect responsible for the collision. Irion was arrested on October 9, 2026, at a residence near East Lamona Avenue and North Bond Street.
Irion was booked into the Fresno County Jail for felony hit-and-run causing death, vehicular manslaughter, and driving on a suspended driver’s license.”
