TRUCKEE, CA — A Nevada County jury found 56 year old Grass Valley resident Devin Roland Smith guilty of domestic violence offenses on July 10 following a two-week trial in the Nevada County Superior Court in Truckee.
According to evidence presented during the proceeding, Smith battered and strangled his girlfriend and prevented her from making an emergency call to 911. The jury convicted the defendant of causing injury to a dating partner, in violation of California Penal Code section 273.5, and interference with a wireless communication device, under Penal Code section 591.5.
The prosecution was led by Deputy District Attorney Ashlyn Clark, following an investigation conducted by Nevada County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Brokaw. The trial was presided over by Nevada County Superior Court Judge Yvette Durant.
Court records indicate the legal proceedings in case number CR0007096 began following a criminal complaint filed in October 2025. Pretrial proceedings included a preliminary examination in March 2026, where the court held Smith to answer on the charges, followed by an information filing later that month and subsequent trial readiness conferences.
Judge Durant has scheduled Smith’s sentencing hearing for August 18, 2026, at 1:30 p.m. in Department A.
