GRASS VALLEY — On the evening of May 20th, local police on patrol noticed a vehicle driving strangely and suspected the driver may be under the influence.

A traffic stop was attempted by the police and an escape by the suspect, ultimately leading to a short vehicle pursuit to the intersection of Richardson Street and East Main. There the suspect tried to flee on foot, leaving his car in gear and letting it roll into the intersection.

The suspect cut through a business parking lot, jumped a fence bordering Wolf Creek, and ran up the creek. By that time, however, GVPD officers had surrounded the area and were able to take him into custody.

The suspect, identified as 30-year-old Stephen Woodward Jr. of Grass Valley, is charged with reckless evasion, hit-and-run, driving on a suspended license, and an outstanding warrant for — of all things — driving on a suspended license.
