Nevada County Sheriff releases statement on New Year’s Day officer-involved shooting

The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office has announced an investigation into an officer-involved shooting on New Year’s Day.

Around 1 PM, Nevada County dispatch began receiving reports of a man walking down Squirrel Creek Road with a shotgun over his shoulder, to which multiple officers from both the Sheriff’s Department and Grass Valley PD responded.

Officers checked the area and eventually located the man, who was indeed armed with a suspected firearm, at the intersection of Oak Drive and Walker Drive.

Officers gave several verbal commands and even deployed a taser to get him to drop the weapon, which proved ineffective. Eventually, officers took the measure of firing their weapons, striking the man.

Though first aid was immediately rendered at the scene, he was later pronounced dead at Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital.

According to an official press release by the Sheriff’s Department, the man had made previous statements about “suicide by cop” and, in a prior contact with law enforcement, had had a firearm taken away for safekeeping.

His identity is being withheld pending notification of family.

The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office has also issued a video update via their Facebook page.
