Former Fresno Police Detective Arrested for Alleged Theft of $60K from Evidence Room
FRESNO, CA — California authorities have announced that a former Fresno PD detective has been arrested for allegedly stealing cash from the department evidence room.
In a press release, the Fresno Police Department reported that the investigation had begun in May of 2024, when the detective had improperly checked out the cash and never returned it.
The Fresno Police Department requested that the FBI conduct an independent investigation, police said.
As well, an internal investigation by the police department led to the detective’s employment being terminated in June of this year.
On Thursday, Oct, 9, the detective was arrested “for multiple violations of California state law,” according to the report.
The arrested detective has since been identified as Rey Medeles, a 10-year veteran of the department. Medeles is reportedly accused of stealing $60,000.
“I am grateful for the collaborative efforts of the FBI and California DOJ in helping us to ensure the former detective is held accountable for his actions,” Fresno Police Chief Mindy Casto said in a statement on Tuesday.
