Man Arrested after Allegedly Threatening Bystanders, Officers with Knife

A Butte County man was recently arrested after allegedly threatening people with a knife at One Mile Recreation area in Chico.

Police responded on the afternoon of Saturday, November 26, to a report of an armed individual threatening people with a knife near Sycamore Pool.

Responding officers contacted the indivdual, identified as 39-year-old Ralph DiConstanzo, noting that DiCostanzo was armed with a fixed blade knife and clearly behaving erratically.

DiCostanzo was unresponsive to multiple attempted de-escalation techniques, police said, at one point allegedly aggressing towards officers with the knife. Officers ultimately made the decision to implement “less-lethal” force, attempting to subdue DiCostanzo with the use of a taser, which proved ineffective.

Officers then used bean bag rounds, which successfully allowed them opportunity to place DiCostanzo in handcuffs.

Following medical clearance, DiCostanzo was arrested and booked on suspicion of brandishing a deadly weapon, threatening and resisting a peace officer, resisting and delaying a peace officer, battery on an officer, and possession of a switchblade.
