A Kings County man was recently arrested on suspicion of theft, for which he allegedly blamed taking a Xanax, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Early on the morning of Tuesday, November 23, deputies responded to the 8000 block of 14th Avenue, where a person had reported finding stolen property such as a trailer and various tools he knew to belong to his neighbor. As officers began to investigate, numerous residents came forward and claimed they’d had property stolen during the night, police said.

One person was able to provide surveillance video showing the suspect — whom a deputy recognized as 30-year-old Maged Shaw — taking items from their property. Deputies also reportedly found Shaw’s phone at one of the crime scenes.

The investigating deputy visited Shaw’s known residence and located other stolen property there, all of which was returned to their rightful owners. Though Shaw wasn’t home at the time, deputies caught up with him the next day and took him into custody. During an interview, Shaw allegedly told investigators that he’d taken a Xanax, and that this had driven him to go around the neighborhood stealing items.

Shaw was ultimately booked on suspicion of second-degree burglary, grand theft, and felony vandalism.
