State Board Denies Parole for Inmate Convicted in 2020 Marysville Knife Attack

YUBA, CA – Prosecutors with the Yuba County District Attorney’s Office successfully argued against the release of an inmate serving a 31-years-to-life sentence for a 2020 assault in Marysville, resulting in a three-year parole denial.

The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation issued the decision on Thursday following a hearing for Clayton John. The outcome marks John’s second parole denial since his conviction. Under Proposition 57, individuals serving life sentences become eligible for parole consideration upon completing the base term for their primary offense, which was set at three years for John’s conviction of assault with a deadly weapon. He previously received a three-year denial during his initial hearing in 2023.

The underlying conviction stems from an incident in 2020 at a Flyers gas station in Marysville, where John approached a customer at a fuel pump, made verbal threats, and lunged at the individual with a knife. The victim defended himself, causing John to flee before being apprehended by Marysville Police officers.

At the time of the offense, John had been on parole for one month following prior convictions for strike offenses in Sutter County in 2017 and 2018, which included a separate knife attack.

In reaching its decision, the parole board cited John’s risk rating, criminal history, and past performance under community supervision. He will become eligible for his next parole review in three years.
