Deputies Arrest a Hayward Man for Allegedly Making Threats at Gunpoint
HAYWARD, CA— Eugene Harris, a 27-year-old resident of Hayward, was arrested by Alameda
County Sheriff’s Office deputies on August 4. Harris allegedly threatened a victim in Dublin at
gunpoint, before fleeing by car to Hayward.
Dublin police broadcast an alert to be on the lookout for the car at 11:08 a.m. An Automated
license plate reader detected the car traveling through an unincorporated area of Hayward on
northbound Interstate 880.
A prepared statement from the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office said. “Deputies from the Eden
Township Substation responded and attempted to stop the vehicle. Harris fled leading
deputies on a pursuit.”
Harris attempted to exit the freeway at Marina Boulevard in San Leandro, where the car
crashed into a barrier wall. San Leandro police and the sheriff’s office dispatched armored
vehicles to the scene, because Harris was believed to be armed.
Deputies deployed drones to monitor to the situation from above. Harris surrendered himself
peacefully following a brief standoff. No injuries were reported.
Harris was placed under arrest at 2:51 p.m., and transported to Alameda County Santa Rita
Jail. He remains in custody in lieu of $100,000 bond.
