UNION CITY — Two foolhardy teenagers played a modified version of Russian Roulette resulting in a near tragedy. Their teen bravado resulted in one 16-year-old boy being arrested for shooting another 16-year-old boy.

This stupidity occurred at a home near the intersection of Palmetto Drive and Butternut Court on July 10th. A police dispatcher received a 911 call about the shooting shortly after 5 p.m.

Responding officers located the 16-year-old victim suffering from a single gunshot wound in his chest. The boy was transported to a hospital to receive medical treatment. Fortunately, he is expected to fully recover from his injuries.

Altogether five juveniles were present when the unlucky boy was wounded. Detectives investigating what happened learned the suspect and victim were participating in a round of Russian Roulette.

The participants played a modified version of this potentially deadly game. Instead of aiming a gun at themselves, they pointed the firearm at each other as they played.

Not surprisingly, playing with an unsecured gun resulted in a near tragedy. One participant was struck by a bullet when the firearm was discharged. No information was released concerning how the boys were able to gain access to the firearm.

Thus far, just the one 16-year-old was arrested. His faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon, and negligent discharge of a firearm.

The case remains open. Police are continuing to investigate circumstances leading to this near tragedy. Anyone with information can call Union City police detective Josh Clubb at 510-675-5227.
