Juvenile Suspect Apprehended After Attempted Robbery and Foot Pursuit in Carmel
CARMEL, CA — Law enforcement personnel from multiple agencies arrested a 15-year-old male juvenile on May 9, 2026, following an attempted robbery in the Carmel Rancho Shopping Center. The incident began at approximately 10:30 a.m. when deputies responded to the 26300 block of Carmel Rancho Lane after receiving 911 calls regarding an attempted theft of a purse and personal items from a woman.
Witnesses reported that a juvenile suspect fled the scene and was initially pursued by a community member. Upon the arrival of deputies, the suspect initiated a foot pursuit through several local businesses, temporarily eluding capture. Using descriptions provided by witnesses and receiving assistance from the Carmel Police Department, authorities eventually located and detained the 15-year-old near Carmel Middle School.
The victim had departed the scene prior to the conclusion of the immediate investigation but contacted the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office the following day to confirm the attempted robbery. Sheriff Tina Nieto issued a statement acknowledging the assistance of community members while advising the public against physical intervention in dangerous situations, emphasizing that witness statements and emergency calls were the primary factors in the suspect’s apprehension.
The juvenile was released to the custody of his father. The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office has forwarded a request for prosecution to the District Attorney’s Office for charges of attempted robbery and resisting or delaying a peace officer. The California State Parks Rangers also provided assistance during the response and investigation.
