CHP Seizes 150 Lbs. of Khat During Traffic Stop on SR-99 in Merced County

MERCED COUNTY, CA — “On May 1, 2026, a traffic stop on northbound State Route 99 in Merced County led to a significant drug arrest.

After observing multiple vehicle code violations, CHP officers conducted an enforcement stop and contacted the driver. During the contact, officers observed several indicators consistent with criminal activity.

Following a conversation with the driver, officers obtained consent to search the vehicle. During the search, approximately 150 pounds of khat were located.

Khat, also known as qat, is a stimulant classified as a Schedule I controlled substance in the United States. It is typically chewed like tobacco and can cause paranoia, hallucinations, hyperactivity, and delusions.

The driver admitted to selling khat and was arrested for possession and transportation of a controlled substance.”
