Mother & Infant Injured in Attempted Homicide

“Merced – Merced Police officers arrested Charles Jasper (21) for two charges of attempted homicide, gang enhancements, felon in possession of a firearm, and shooting at a motor vehicle.

At 1:09 PM, Officers responded to the 3100 block of R Street after receiving calls of gunshots heard in the area. Approximately 15 minutes later, officers responded to the Lowe’s parking lot for a victim struck by gunfire. The victim said the shooting occurred on R Street.

When officers arrived, they contacted a 22-year-old female and 11-month-old infant that were both struck by gunfire. The mother sustained an injury to the leg and the infant was struck in the head. The mother and daughter sustained minor injuries and were transported to an area trauma center for medical treatment. Their injuries are not life-threatening.

Charles Jasper was identified as the suspect. Gang Violence Suppression Unit officers developed information on Jasper’s whereabouts and placed him under arrest. He was booked into custody at the Merced County Jail.
