ATASCADERO, CA – An Atascadero Police Department sergeant detained a 20-year-old Grover Beach resident on March 6, 2026, following a report of vandalism in the downtown area. At approximately 1:30 a.m., the sergeant was patrolling the 5900 block of Entrada Avenue when he observed an individual who appeared to be applying spray-paint graffiti to the wall of a local business.
When the sergeant attempted to initiate a detention for the purpose of an investigation, the suspect fled the area on foot. Following a search of the vicinity, officers located the suspect hiding behind a business in the 5900 block of West Mall. The individual, identified as Michael Josiah Brown, was taken into custody without further incident.
During the subsequent investigation, officers determined that Brown had reportedly performed earlier that evening with a musical band at a nearby establishment. Authorities located fresh graffiti at two separate businesses in the 5900 block of Entrada Avenue. The graffiti displayed the name of the band, and investigators believe the markings were intended to promote the group.
Brown was transported to the San Luis Obispo County Jail, where he was booked on charges of felony vandalism and misdemeanor resisting, obstructing, or delaying a peace officer. The Atascadero Police Department stated that the investigation remains open and active as they work to identify potential accomplices. Members of the public with information regarding this incident are encouraged to contact the Atascadero Police Department at 805-461-5051.
