Prunedale Man Arrested Following Standoff and Welfare Check in Marina
MARINA, CA — On March 8, 2026, Alfonso Garcia Mesa, 43, was taken into custody following a multi-agency operation and a two-hour standoff in Marina. The incident began earlier that day during a domestic disturbance in Prunedale while Mesa was picking up his 10-year-old son. Following the disturbance, the child’s mother requested a welfare check from the Salinas Police Department, citing concerns regarding Mesa’s history.
Background checks performed by officials confirmed that Mesa had an active felony arrest warrant. At approximately 8:16 p.m., the Salinas Police Department issued a “be on the lookout” (BOL) alert for Mesa and the child, who were traveling in a white GMC pickup truck. Using the FLOCK camera system, law enforcement tracked the vehicle to Abrams Drive in the City of Marina.
At approximately 9:54 p.m., Marina Police officers located the truck on side streets off Imjin Parkway and initiated a traffic stop on California Avenue near Marina Heights. Due to reports that the driver might be armed and the presence of a child in the front passenger seat, officers conducted a high-risk stop. Mesa reportedly refused to comply with initial police instructions, leading to a standoff that lasted over two hours.
During the negotiations, the Salinas Police Department, CSUMB Police, and the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office provided additional resources and personnel. The standoff concluded when Mesa released his son into the care of officers and subsequently surrendered without further incident.
Mesa was booked into the Monterey County Jail on several charges, including child endangerment, delaying or obstructing an officer, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He is also being held on a no-bail felony arrest warrant for a parole violation. The child was recovered safely during the operation.
