GREENFIELD — On Sunday, April 22, Greenfield PD responded to an area of El Camino Real and Elm Avenue on reports of a shooting. Once on scene, they discovered 35-year-old local Jose Refugio-Alvarez dead from multiple gunshot wounds.

Due to the scale of the crime scene, additional resources had to be commissioned. Greenfield Chief of Police Adele Frese called upon assistance from the Monterey County DA’S Office who, on the following Wednesday, apprehended 25-year-old Fabian Martinez-Caballero for his role in the crime.

The DA has determined that this was a gang-related murder, meaning that the defendant may face special circumstances that come with gang enhancements. It has also been determined that the murder was carried out at the behest of the Norteños street gang.

Martinez-Caballero was arraigned and faces charges of accessory to murder, as he was the get-away driver for the shooter. Superior Court Judge Andrew Liu will preside over further arraignment on Wednesday, May 4th.

The case is still under investigation by the DA’s Office. Anyone with information that may be useful is encouraged to contact DA Investigator Jorge Gutierrez at 831-759-6627.
