Two Brothers Found Dead in Apparent Murder-Suicide in Winterhaven
WINTERHAVEN, CA – “On Friday, October 10, 2025, at approximately 6:30 p.m., deputies from the Imperial County Sheriff’s Office Winterhaven Patrol Division responded to a residence in the 500 block of Railroad Avenue in Winterhaven, California, following a report of two deceased individuals located inside the home.
Upon arrival, deputies contacted a distraught male who had discovered the bodies of his two sons. Deputies entered the residence and located two adult males, identified as Matthew Vargas, 19, and Jonathan Vargas, 23, both deceased from apparent gunshot wounds.
An investigation was immediately initiated by the Imperial County Sheriff’s Office Investigations Unit, with assistance from the Scientific Investigations Unit and the Coroner’s Office. A firearm and spent shell casings were recovered from the scene.
Preliminary findings suggest the incident may have been a murder-suicide between the two brothers. Currently, there are no indications of any outstanding suspects, and there is no known threat to public safety.
Autopsy and forensic testing are pending to determine the official cause and manner of death. The investigation remains active and ongoing.
Investigators have been in contact with the Vargas family and are providing updates and support as the investigation continues. The Imperial County Sheriff’s Office extends its deepest condolences to the family during this difficult time.
