Midnight Shooting Leads to Arrests

– By F. Scott Faulkner

OXNARD, CA  —  Just after midnight on Oct. 8, Ventura County sheriff’s deputies responded to reports of gunfire
striking a home in the unincorporated community of El Rio in Oxnard.

According to VCSD spokesman Det. Sgt. Kevin Kipp, “the house was damaged
by bullets, but no one inside was hurt.”

Deputies at the scene quickly determined the gunfire stemmed from a domestic violence dispute.

Witnesses described a vehicle fleeing the scene, which was later “located at a gas station in the
City of Camarillo.”

When deputies attempted to pull the car over, the driver took off at high
speed southbound on Highway 101. The car was later found abandoned several miles south in the Malibu Hills area.

Detectives subsequently identified the suspects as Juan Hernandez Nunez, 20, and Angel Fuentes
Hernandez, 21, both of Sylmar.

In a collaborative and coordinated effort among law enforcement details, investigators from the Headquarters Patrol Station, West County Special Enforcement
Unit, and Thousand Oaks Special Enforcement Unit tracked the men down in Sylmar and
arrested them.

Both men were transported to Ventura County Jail, where Nunez was booked on charges of
assault with a deadly weapon, shooting at an occupied dwelling, and making criminal threats.

He remains in custody on $500,000 bail.

Hernandez was booked as an accessory and later released after posting $10,000 bail.
