Monterey Man Arrested After Domestic Disturbance, Assault Weapon Recovered

MONTEREY, CA  — “On Thursday, August 7, 2025, at approximately 5:10 p.m., Monterey Police Officers were dispatched to a domestic disturbance in the 500 block of Belden Street.

Monterey County Communications provided constant updates to the officers as they arrived. The suspect, Paul Opsahl, 54, of Monterey threatened to kill the victim, shoot officers as they arrived on scene, and then kill himself.

The victim was able to flee the residence as officers arrived. Opsahl followed the victim out of the house and was arrested by officers on scene.

A search revealed Opsahl was in possession of an assault weapon.

Opsahl was transported and booked into the Monterey County Jail for violations of California Penal Code (PC) 422(a) – Criminal threats, 1203.2 PC – Violation of probation, and 30605(a) PC – Possession of an assault weapon. His bail was set at $37,500.
