Humboldt County Authorities Identify Suspect Killed in Officer-Involved Shooting
MCKINLEYVILLE, CA — Authorities have released new information regarding an officer-involved shooting that occurred in the Glendale community on Saturday, July 26.
In a press release, the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office identified the individual who was fatally shot as Jared Randell Nelson, 35, of Eureka. Nelson was reportedly pronounced deceased upon arrival at a local hospital.
Just prior to the shooting, deputies had been on the 1300 block of Glendale Drive attempting to locate Nelson, who had reportedly been wanted on multiple charges. Authorities said he had active arrest warrants for being a felon in possession of a firearm, probation violation, and an out-of-county warrant.
Nelson was reportedly also involved in a prior incident involving the brandishing of a firearm.
During a foot pursuit, Nelson allegedly discharged a .45 caliber handgun at deputies. The firearm was recovered at the scene.
Three deputies involved have been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard protocol in officer-involved shootings.
The investigation remains ongoing.
