“Yesterday, Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to an interrupted burglary at a residence in Royal Oaks. While responding a woman reported that a man, later identified as Jose Berber Vazquez, entered her home looking for “Roberto”. He then left and got into the passenger’s seat of a red car which then drove away.

Responding deputies were also given information from Watsonville Police department that a burglary had been committed in their city and a red Volvo sped away from the scene with two men inside.

One of our deputies spotted the Volvo traveling at a high rate of speed westbound on Salinas Road near Highway 1. The deputy got behind the car and turned on his emergency lights and siren. Soon after, the car pulled over. But, once the deputy stepped out of his patrol car, the red Volvo sped off at a high rate of speed southbound on Highway 1.

The deputy continued to pursue the Volvo. The driver, later identified as Daniel Vasquez Medina, lost control and crashed near Jensen Road.

Both Medina and Vazquez were transported to the Natividad Medical Center. Vazquez died of his injuries. Medina was treated and later booked into the Monterey County Jail.”
