UNION CITY – Police interrupted a burglary in progress early Sunday morning. Officers were dispatched to a business located on Western Avenue, after an employee at an adjacent business called to report seeing two men trying to pry open a backdoor.

Two suspects ran away when officers arrived shortly before 7 a.m. on December 18. Both men jumped over a fence landing in a storage yard while being chased. One man practically ran into a waiting officer, who surmised they might run in that direction. He tried to run away again, police said, but was quickly taken into custody.

The second suspect temporarily got away and hid in some bushes, until he was later flushed by a police dog. Union City Police requested assistance from the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office; its K-9 unit located and arrested him.

Andrew R. Serna, 35, of Dublin and Paul Ong, 38 of Fremont, were each arrested on suspicion of burglary, vandalism, resisting an officer, providing false information, and profile violation.

Serna, who also faces firearm possession charges, is being held at Santa Rita Jail for $170,000 bail. Further details about Ong’s status were unavailable.
