Man Charged with 14 Felonies for a Shooting at Bay Bridge Toll Plaza

OAKLAND — Motorists behave badly at the Oakland-San Francisco Bay Bridge toll plaza, but one memorable maneuver resulted in 14 felony charges. A man is now in custody for shooting at a vehicle and child abuse.

Shots from a semi-automatic weapon were fired at a vehicle traveling westbound, after exiting the toll stations on January 10. Fortunately, the victims targeted by the freeway gunman were not injured.

California Highway Patrol officers assigned to the Oakland area responded when the shooting was reported. The officers located the victims inside their vehicle pulled over on the side of the freeway.

Detectives assigned to the CHP Golden Gate Special Investigations Unit also responded to the scene. Their investigation identified a suspect vehicle and 23- year-old Jose A. Mireles as the suspected gunman.

On January 14, CHP officers executed a search warrant at Mireles’ residence in Richmond. Additional evidence linking Mireles to the shooting incident was located.

Mireles was questioned at CHP offices located at 3601 Telegraph Avenue in Oakland. “Mireles eventually confessed to the shooting during interviews with CHP detectives,” according to a prepared CHP statement.

Mireles was subsequently arrested and booked into Santa Rita Jail. He remains in custody in lieu of $1,250,000 bond, pending a court hearing on February 18.

His charges include shooting at an occupied vehicle, assault with a semi-automatic firearm, and attempted murder. He also faces multiple other weapons charges, and one charge for willful cruelty involving possible injury to a child.
