DUBLIN — Grandparents from Dublin were arrested on suspicion of homicide
on September 26.
They allegedly murdered their son-in-law at a park during the
middle of that Saturday afternoon. Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, both 77,
were booked into Alameda County Santa Rita Jail, ineligible for release on
bond.
The victim Jonathan McKinsey, 40, of Dublin, died at Dublin Sports Grounds,
6700 Dublin Boulevard. Police found him unresponsive lying on the ground in
the middle of a parking lot. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene. McKinsey was reportedly embroiled in a custody dispute with his estranged wife, regarding their three children, ages 3 to 7.
Law enforcement has not indicated whether any of the children were present when the fatal shooting occurred.
Besides the father, no other injuries were reported.
Witnesses identified the suspect-grandparents who were apprehended nearby.
“Their cooperation was critical to the swift arrests,” Dublin police said in a
prepared statement. Both suspects were placed under arrest at 3:15 p.m.
The suspects reportedly wore masks when the victim was fatally shot.
Witnesses told police the man shot the victim first, and then handed the gun to
the woman, who also shot the victim.
Both grandparents were booked on suspicion of first-degree murder. Zhang and
Chen were also booked for conspiracy to commit crime, and willfully discharging
a firearm with gross negligence. In addition, they were booked on suspicion of
child abuse, with possible gross bodily injury or death.
