Second Victim Was Left To Die in Agricultural Field
CHUALAR—Investigators with the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office have arrested an Antioch man for the murder of a Gonzalez teen and the attempted murder of a Chualar man. Authorities arrested 33-year-old Marques Adrian Gaines at his home in Antioch.
On Wednesday July 10th, shortly before midnight, deputies were dispatched to Adam Street just outside the small City of Chualar in Monterey County. They responded to a report of a shooting that had just occurred.
Upon their arrival, deputies were directed to an agricultural field just off Adams Street. There they discovered the deceased body of a 19-year-old Gonzalez resident, identified as Gabriel Javon Rodriguez, Jr.
“Medical Personnel tried to revive Rodriguez but he had suffered a fatal injury, and was pronounced dead at the scene.” Monterey County Sheriff’s Investigations Sergeant Terry Kaiser wrote in a press release, “A second victim, identified as 20-year-old Chualar resident Rafael Vasquez was also treated at the scene, then flown to a Santa Clara County Hospital for treatment of his injuries.”
Vasquez survived his injuries and was released from the hospital. Deputies continued to investigate the shooting. They did recover a weapon that they believed was involved in the shooting.
Upon following numerous leads, Investigators developed one that led them to the Northern California City of Antioch, where they arrested Marques Gaines at his home for Rodriguez’s murder and the attempted murder of Vasquez. He was taken into custody without incident and returned to Salinas where he was booked in the Monterey County Jail. The case has been submitted to The Monterey County District Attorney’s Office for review.
Investigators are still working on this case and they ask if anyone has information to call the Sheriff’s Office at 1-831-755-3772 and ask to speak with either Investigator Bret Speirs, or Investigation Sergeant Terry Kaiser.
