Sex offender arrested for burglary in San Jose

A registered sex offender has been arrested for an early morning break-in that a resident interrupted on Tuesday, San Jose police are reporting.

Ryan Kamfolt

According to authorities, the female resident called 911 just after 3 a.m. Tuesday and reported that she awoke to find an unknown man inside her bedroom standing over her. She told police she screamed and the suspect fled the Southbrook Drive home on foot.

Two patrol officers in the area quickly responded and located the suspect, 29-year-old Ryan Kamfolt, allegedly attempting to act like a bystander in the area. Kamfolt matched the suspect description and was detained by police.

Further investigation revealed that Kamfolt was wearing an ankle bracelet and had his smartphone running a police scanner application that had been set to a San Jose Police Department channel. Officers discovered that Kamfolt was on parole for burglary and is also a registered sex offender. They discovered a pair of women’s underwear in his pocket. It appeared to investigators that he entered the residence through the kitchen window and fled through the sliding glass door.

After fleeing the home, Kamfolt tried to pose as a bystander in the neighborhood

Kamfolt had last registered as a transient in February and was in compliance with his registration, police say.

“This was a great arrest of a very dangerous suspect,” Acting Chief of Police Larry Esquivel said. “Our patrol officers did a great job of quickly getting to the scene and finding the suspect. Because of their quick response, he won’t be back out there tonight doing the same thing.”

Kamfolt was booked into Santa Clara County Jail for residential burglary and a parole violation.
