Stockton police have announced the arrest of a suspect in the fatal shooting of Stockton Fire Captain Vidal “Max” Fortuna.

In the early morning hours of Monday, January 31, Fortuna was fatally shot while responding to a report of a dumpster fire in the area of Washington and Aurora Streets. Fellow firefighters quickly provided emergency medical care, but Fortuna later passed away at the hospital. Stockton Fire Chief Richard Edwards announced his passing later that morning.

This morning, February 1, police announced the arrest of 67-year-old Robert Somerville as the primary suspect in Fortuna’s murder. He has been booked at the San Joaquin County Jail on homicide and weapons charges.
