BERKELEY — Noah Stein, 35, of Oakland, allegedly recorded secret videos up
the skirts of girls and women in Berkeley. Stein was arrested October 30, and
released from Berkeley City Jail on bond shortly afterward.
Detectives began investigating illicit hidden-camera voyeurism on October 26,
near the University of California campus in Berkeley. “A teenager reported a
man may have recorded videos up her skirt,” Berkeley police said in a prepared
statement.
The incident happened at lunchtime while the minor was waiting in line at Lox
Stock & Bagel shop, 2043 Addison Way. “The victim discovered the concealed
camera after inadvertently stepping on the man’s foot, and noticing a camera
pointed toward her.”
Detectives identified a possible suspect and reviewed video from a license plate
reader, which placed Stein in the area when the incident occurred.
A few days later, a passerby in the area of Durant Avenue and Bowditch Street
reported similar incidents to a patrol officer. “The person reported seeing a man
with a camera attached to his shoe, apparently recording videos up women’s
skirts,” according to Berkeley PD.
Stein was detained on the 2500 block of Durant Avenue. Police searched the
vicinity for the camera that he allegedly used, and found a camera discarded
inside a trash bin.
Detectives later searched Stein’s Oakland residence, where several recording
devices were recovered. They also discovered a concealed camera inside Taco
Bell Cantina 2538 Durant Avenue.
Stein was booked on suspicion of invasion of privacy using a concealed video
recording device. In addition, he was booked for annoying or molesting a minor,
and destroying evidence.
