Standoff at Apartment Complex After Domestic Disturbance Report in Goleta

GOLETA, CA  — Oct. 26, 2026 — A reported domestic disturbance in Goleta led to a brief standoff Oct. 24 after a knife-wielding man fled from deputies and took refuge in a nearby horse corral.

According to Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department public information officer Raquel Zick, deputies were dispatched to an apartment complex at approximately 11:34 a.m. following a report of a domestic dispute in progress.

Upon arrival, deputies located a man carrying a knife who was uncooperative and fled to a horse corral at a nearby equestrian center, where he waved the knife and refused to surrender, Zick said.

Crisis negotiators and a sheriff’s K-9 team were called in to assist as deputies worked to contain the situation. Nearby roads were closed to traffic for approximately an hour while authorities attempted to resolve the standoff.

As the standoff entered its second hour, Maurilio Carriedo, 40, of Santa Barbara surrendered to deputies and was taken into custody.

Carriedo was transported to Santa Barbara County Main Jail, where he was booked on suspicion of domestic violence and on charges of violating probation and resisting arrest.

Carriedo has had previous encounters with law enforcement involving domestic violence allegations. In April 2025, deputies responded to another reported domestic dispute involving Carriedo at the same apartment complex.

At this time, he remains in custody without bail.
