Woman Dies From Self-Inflicted Injuries Following Stabbing, Carjackings, and Multi-Agency Pursuit

HOLLISTER, CA — A 34-year-old Hollister resident died from self-inflicted wounds on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2026, following a sequence of events involving a stabbing, multiple carjackings, and a pursuit across regional jurisdictions.

Hollister Police Department officers initially responded to a stabbing report in the 1100 block of San Benito Street at approximately 9:46 a.m. Responding personnel located the victim—the suspect’s domestic partner—at a nearby carwash suffering from stab wounds to his chest and neck. A second victim, identified as the suspect’s sister, was also present and reported that her vehicle had been taken at knifepoint. Authorities identified the suspect as Vanessa Garcia.

After regional law enforcement broadcast a vehicle description using license plate recognition data, dispatchers received reports that the vehicle had been involved in a head-on collision on Highway 152 near Casa de Fruta. Investigators determined Garcia exited the disabled vehicle, carjacked another motorist at knifepoint, and drove westbound toward Gilroy.

Officers from the Gilroy Police Department, the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office, and the California Highway Patrol initiated a pursuit along the highway. Despite the deployment of spike strips, the vehicle continued into San Jose, where law enforcement briefly lost visual contact. After the vehicle became disabled, Garcia attempted additional carjackings.

San Jose Police Department officers located Garcia while she was still armed with a weapon. Officials reported Garcia inflicted severe self-harm at the scene; officers administered first aid before emergency personnel transported her to a hospital, where she died from the injuries.

Records indicate Garcia had been involved in an hours-long armed standoff with Hollister police officers on Sept. 26, 2026, after which she was detained for medical care.
