Officers Recover Repainted Stolen Motorcycle Following Coordinated Surveillance
CARLSBAD, CA — A quick-thinking patrol officer and aerial drone tracking led to the recovery of a stolen motorcycle and the arrest of a suspect who had previously evaded law enforcement.
The incident occurred while Officer Casciola was conducting a routine patrol and observed a motorcycle rider quickly departing a shopping center parking lot upon seeing the patrol vehicle. Recalling a recent “be on the lookout” bulletin, the officer noted physical similarities between the rider, the motorcycle, and an active stolen vehicle report.
Recognizing that the suspect had fled from law enforcement during previous encounters, responding E-1 squad officers established a coordinated plan to safely contain the rider and prevent a vehicle pursuit. Officers deployed a police drone to maintain continuous aerial surveillance while ground units moved into position to contact the rider.
Law enforcement personnel successfully intercepted the rider and took him into custody without incident.
A subsequent inspection revealed that the motorcycle had been partially repainted and fitted with an altered license plate in an apparent attempt to obscure its identity. Officers located the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and confirmed the motorcycle was the vehicle previously reported stolen.
The suspect was taken into custody and booked on charges including suspicion of possessing a stolen vehicle and possession of drug paraphernalia.
