Son Arrested as Suspect in Fatal Stabbing of His Father in Castro Valley
CASTRO VALLEY, CA — John T. Powell, 20, of Castro Valley, allegedly fatally stabbed his father at the family’s residence on Parsons Avenue. Alameda County Sheriff’s Office deputies took him into custody at the home on September 5.
Deputies were dispatched at approximately 1:30 p.m. to a report of a domestic disturbance, involving an injured person. It turned out to be a terrible family tragedy.
Further investigation revealed that a physical altercation had occurred inside the residence between the suspect’s parents. Evidently, the stabbing happened when the son intervened because his mother was in distress. The suspect is heavyset, standing 5 feet, 10 inches tall, weighing 300 pounds.
Responding deputies and paramedics found the 51-year-old father suffering from fatal stab wounds. He was transported to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The suspect son who is unemployed was placed under arrest that afternoon 1:41 p.m. Powell was transported the following day, and booked into Alameda County Santa Rita Jail, September 6 at 3:58 a.m. He remains in custody on suspicion of murder PC 187(A) ineligible for release on bond.
Charges are pending. Powell is scheduled to appear in court for arraignment on September 10, at Wiley W. Manuel Courthouse, Oakland, CA.
