Sheriff’s Office Launches Investigation After Human Remains Found Near Agua Fria Road
MARIPOSA COUNTY, CA — The Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office has launched an active coroner investigation following the recovery of human remains off Agua Fria Road.
On July 26, 2026, sheriff’s deputies responded to the rural location after individuals exploring the area reported finding potential human remains. Sheriff’s personnel, alongside representatives from the California Department of Justice, conducted an initial scene investigation and recovered the remains.
The remains were subsequently transferred to the California Department of Justice facility for forensic processing and identification assistance. As of early September, the identity of the deceased individual has not been confirmed.
Sheriff’s officials confirmed that no additional details will be released until a positive identification is established, next of kin are formally notified, and investigative protocols are completed.
