Lafayette Burglary Suspect Arrested with a Stolen Vehicle in Walnut Creek
WALNUT CREEK, CA — A man with a history of burglary and theft convictions in Contra Costa County
allegedly committed more burglaries in Lafayette. Kohlton S. Kumnick, 34, of Martinez, was arrested in
Walnut Creek on August 14.
Lafayette detectives and Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office deputies took Kumnick into custody at
9:39 a.m. He was apprehended while driving a stolen vehicle in Walnut Creek. The vehicle and a
firearm were recovered.
Kumnick remains in custody at the Martinez Detention Facility in lieu of $516,000 bond. Charges filed
against Kumnick include four counts of first-degree burglary. He is also charged with driving/taking a
vehicle without consent, and possession of firearm by a felon/addict.
Kumnick temporarily evaded law enforcement. Lafayette detectives served a warrant on August 11 to
search a residence on the 3800 block of Alhambra Way in Martinez. When Kumnick saw the police
coming he immediately fled from the area.
A massive but unsuccessful search was conducted that day. Sheriff’s deputies, Martinez police,
Walnut Creek police, and East Bay Regional Park police helped search for Kumnick, but he avoided
capture for another three days.
Kumnick is a repeat offender, and he has served time in state prison. He has prior convictions on his
record for grand theft in 2013; receiving stolen property in 2014; burglaries in 2016; and unlawful
driving or taking a vehicle in 2016.
Kumnick has been arrested more than dozen times since 2013. In April this year, he was arrested for
DUI alcohol/drugs, hit and run, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of drug
paraphernalia.
