ANTIOCH — Police recovered a loaded assault weapon and ammunition, and arrested an armed suspect outside a 7-Eleven store on May 29.
Angelo R. Zuniga, 31, of Antioch, remains in custody at the Martinez Detention Facility in lieu of $240,000 bond.
The incident started with a report of a suspicious person at approximately 2 p.m. A witness reported seeing a man retrieving a firearm from the trunk of a car on San Jose Drive, before driving away.
A patrol officer spotted the black Nissan Maxima in the parking lot at 7-Eleven, 2301 Buchanan Road in Antioch. More officers responded to the scene to assist with this high-risk vehicle contact.
Officers observed a loaded AR-style pistol wedged between the driver’s seat and center console. A
search of the car turned up additional weapon components, along with ammunition and multiple
magazines. Zuniga was placed under arrest at 2:08 p.m., without further incident.
The following charges have been filed against Zuniga –
· Possession of an assault weapon PC 30605(A)
· Carrying a concealed firearm in a vehicle PC 25400(A)
· Carrying a loaded firearm PC 25850(A)
· Possession, manufacture or import of large capacity magazine PC 32310(A)
The suspect is a familiar face. Since 2017, Zuniga has been arrested five times by Antioch police. His prior arrests also pertained to weapons-related offenses. Zuniga was also previously arrested for DUI alcohol/drugs.
