Suspect in Custody Charged for Attempted Murders in Alameda Shopping District

ALAMEDA — U.S. Marshals and Alameda police officers on July 8 arrested Malachi Sevey,
19, of Pittsburg, and his girlfriend as an accessory. Sevey is charged with attempted murders
in a shooting last month at a crowded plaza in Alameda.

Gunfire erupted on June 11 on Park Street at approximately 9 p.m. in the South Shore
shopping district. Sevey allegedly fired 14 rounds from a semiautomatic rifle that injured two
victims. Sevey reportedly fled from the scene in a vehicle later found abandoned on June 12
at an undisclosed location.

When the shooting occurred, Alameda officers and East Bay Regional Park District Police
were nearby monitoring a large rowdy crowd. It was moving from Crown Beach to a parking
lot at Alameda South Shore Center.

Responding officers found a man with gunshot wound in his head, and a teenager shot in the
thigh. Both victims survived.

“Detectives worked diligently with local and federal law enforcement partners to locate the
suspect,” Alameda police said in a prepared statement. Sevey was arrested in Antioch, along
with his girlfriend, Lyla M. Duggan, 18, who lives in Antioch. She is charged as an accessory
after the fact for allegedly helping Sevey evade capture.

Sevey remains in custody at Alameda County Santa Rita Jail, charged for attempted murders.
His charges also include assault with a firearm, and shooting at an occupied vehicle. Plus he
faces charges related to intentional discharge of a firearm causing great bodily injury.

Sevey has a prior juvenile conviction or convictions with increasing seriousness, according to
an additional charge filed against him. No further details were disclosed.
