Suspect in Custody for Attempted Murder in San Rafael Canal District Shooting

SAN RAFAEL, CA — An 18-year-old San Rafael resident remains in custody in connection with a daytime shooting in the Canal District. Diego A. Diaz-Flores was booked into Marin County Jail on July 2 on suspicion of attempted murder.

The shooting occurred June 26 at approximately 1:26 p.m., near 40 Louise Street. Multiple callers reported a fight followed by gunfire. Responding officers found a 28-year-old man suffering from gunshot wounds in his torso. Paramedics transported the victim to a hospital for medical treatment.

Detectives obtained surveillance video showing the suspect and victim arguing, and the shooting that followed. The firearm used was a distinctive multi-colored handgun.

“The video also provided detectives with additional leads regarding the individuals involved,” San Rafael police said in a prepared statement.

On June 27, officer conducted a traffic stop on the 800 block of Third Street, involving a male juvenile. Officers observed a multi-colored handgun in plain view on the rear passenger side floorboard of the vehicle.

The juvenile was the sole occupant of the vehicle. He was arrested for illegal possession of a firearm, and booked at Marin County Juvenile Hall. Surveillance data and interviews established that the juvenile was nearby during the June 26 shooting involving Diaz-Flores.

A warrant was obtained to search a residence on Tamalpais Avenue, where Diaz-Flores was placed under arrest. Additional evidence corroborating the suspect’s involvement in the shooting was recovered during search, according to SRPD.
