Salida Woman Arrested on Multiple Charges Following Vehicle Pursuit and K9 Deployment

SALIDA, CA  — On April 30, 2026, at approximately 6:48 p.m., deputies with the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office responded to a confidential address in Salida following reports of an assault and vehicle theft. Upon arrival, law enforcement determined that the suspect, identified as 23-year-old Salida resident Melanie Elizabeth Smith, had left the location. The initial investigation indicated that Smith had assaulted family members, possibly caused physical harm to her children, consumed alcohol, and taken a vehicle from the property without authorization.

Deputies utilized the Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) Unit to search the area and located Smith driving the vehicle near Hatch Road and Carpenter Road. When deputies attempted to initiate a traffic stop, Smith did not stop the vehicle, resulting in a brief pursuit. The pursuit ended when the vehicle stopped near the 2300 block of Hatch Road.

During the contact, Smith did not comply with orders and was found to be in possession of an edged weapon. Deputies deployed less-lethal bean bag rounds and utilized K9 Sulley to take Smith into custody. Following her arrest, she was transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation and clearance. Smith was subsequently booked into the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office Public Safety Center. She faces multiple charges, including child abuse, elder abuse, vehicle theft, obstruction, driving under the influence, evading, and assault with a deadly weapon.
