Carlsbad Police Use Drone Technology to Apprehend Suspect in Courier Scam Targeting Elderly Residents
CARLSBAD, CA — The Carlsbad Police Department arrested a suspect in connection with a courier scam targeting an elderly resident. The investigation was initiated after a family member reported that individuals posing as federal agents had convinced the victim to withdraw $20,000 to be handed over to a courier.
In response to the report, detectives coordinated an undercover operation to monitor the exchange. When the suspect arrived at the location and took possession of the currency, officers moved to make contact. The suspect fled the scene on foot, leading to a brief pursuit.
The department utilized drone technology during the incident to track the suspect’s movements in real time. This aerial support allowed officers to coordinate ground movements and manage the apprehension. The suspect was subsequently taken into custody and booked on multiple felony charges, including fraud, elder theft, conspiracy, resisting arrest, and drug-related offenses.
Following the arrest, the Carlsbad Police Department issued a notification stating that government agencies do not request cash withdrawals or the use of couriers for monetary transfers. Officials advise residents to verify the legitimacy of such requests by contacting local law enforcement before taking action.
