BERKELEY, CA — A suspect implicated in a shooting was arrested at her Berkeley residence,
near the Oakland city limits.
Sabrina T. Valadez-Rios, 29, was booked on September 22 for
her alleged involvement in a shooting that happened three weeks earlier.
Sensors in Oakland’s ShotSpotter gunfire detection system alerted Berkeley police about
gunfire on the 1400 block of Harmon Street. The system uses sensors to detect, locate and
alert police about outdoor gunfire, using sound wave analysis.
Berkeley officers responded to the detected gunfire on September 7 shortly before 2 a.m.
Officers investigating the incident found spent bullet casings. However, no injuries or damage
were reported in relation to the gunfire.
The incident was apparently preceded by a domestic dispute. Investigators reviewed
surveillance camera video, and identified the license plate number of the shooter’s vehicle
fleeing from the area.
A license plate check linked Valadez-Rios to the shooting. Investigators obtained a warrant for
her arrest. She was detained subsequently at Market and 61st streets in Berkeley
Berkeley PD next searched the residence of Valadez-Rios nearby. Officers found
incriminating evidence inside her home, including a handgun and ammunition.
Valadez-Rios was placed under arrest on suspicion of discharging a firearm in a negligent
manner PC 246.3 (A).
She has since posted bond, and she was released from custody, pending further review of the incident, and potential charges.
