MOORPARK, CA — May 31, 2025
A child bringing a single bullet to school led authorities to a local home where they found an
unsecured cache of weapons, resulting in the arrest of the child’s father on multiple felony
charges.
Ricardo Nunez, 40, of Moorpark, was taken into custody on May 27 after detectives
discovered two unregistered assault rifles, a handgun, multiple high-capacity magazines, and
ammunition inside his home—all within reach of children.
The chain of events began earlier that day, when a student at Campus Canyon College
Preparatory Academy was found with a single round of ammunition on campus.
According to investigators, the student had brought the round from home to show classmates.
That incident triggered a larger response.
According to Ventura County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson K’Lynn Jackson, the school’s resource officer, “launched a follow-up investigation that led them to the student’s home.”
When detectives made contact with Nunez, the immediately ensuing search of his residence led
to the discovery of the illegal firepower.
Nunez was taken into custody and transported to Ventura County Jail, where he was charged
with child endangerment, unlawful firearm storage, unlawful transfer of a firearm, possession of
assault weapons, and possession of multiple high-capacity magazines.
