UNION CITY, CA  — A SWAT team arrested a man who allegedly assaulted his ex-girlfriend
before barricading himself inside an apartment.

Navroop S. Sandhu, 34, of Fremont, was taken into custody, following a standoff with police.

As it happens, Sandhu was on probation for a prior assault conviction.

His latest run-in with police began on May 12 shortly before 8:30 p.m.

Union City police responded to a report that a man with a knife committed battery. When officers arrived at
Parkside Apartments on Decoto Road, a woman was evacuated safely.

Turns out she was punched, but sustained only minor injuries.

Sandhu was there inside an apartment. He was uncooperative and he refused commands to
exit the apartment.

He allegedly brandished a knife at the police. Next, he barricaded himself
inside the apartment for several hours.

A SWAT team was organized. After several hours of negotiations, Sandhu exited the
apartment carrying a knife.

Evidently, he ignored more police commands. Finally, a K-9 unit was dispatched and he was taken into custody on May 13 at 5:47 a.m..

“The suspect sustained minor injuries during the incident,” Union City police said in a
prepared statement. He was medically cleared prior to being booked into Alameda County
Santa Rita Jail at 12:09 p.m. No officers were reported injured.

Charges filed on May 14 against Sandhu include trespassing, battery, and exhibiting a
weapon to resist arrest.

Since 2022, Sandhu has been arrested 18 times. He has prior arrests
for battery, DUI alcohol/drugs, vehicle theft, and causing fires, among other offenses.
