OAKLAND — A man confronted for fare evasion in the Bay Area Rapid Transit system was arrested for being an armed fugitive. The man from Michigan attempted to flee but he was chased and taken into custody by BART police officers.

Transit police patrols have been increased recently in response to heightened concerns about crime. BART police said in a prepared statement. “This boost in patrols of trains and stations is helping us keep BART safe. In this case, it prevented a suspect with a loaded handgun from entering the system.”

Chace V. Moore, 20, of Redford, MI, was caught during the evening rush hour on February 28. He was arrested at 5:37 p.m. at Lake Merritt Station near downtown Oakland.

“During a struggle, a loaded handgun slid from his waistband, which was found inside his pant leg,” according to BART police. In addition to recovering the firearm, BART officers also confiscated a bag filled with cannabis buds.

A records check revealed that Pleasanton police wanted Moore for an outstanding warrant. Subsequently, he was booked into Alameda County Santa Rita Jail.

On February 29, charges were filed against Moore for carrying a loaded firearm in the BART station in Oakland. Plus, Moore also allegedly committed crimes in Pleasanton in October 2023. For this Moore faces a dozen additional charges including –

  • Vehicle theft
  • Receiving stolen property
  • Carrying an unregistered concealed loaded firearm
  • Possession of a forged driver’s license
  • Evading an officer
