Theft Suspect Shot by Police after Allegedly Shooting Person who Reported Him

A Nevada County man has been arrested on multiple charges after following officer-involved shooting incident earlier this month.

According to a department press release, Grass Valley police officers responded on the afternoon of January 4 to reports of someone possibly stealing parts from a car on the 400 block of French Avenue. As officers canvassed the area to search for the suspect, a gunshot rang out.

Officers soon discovered that the person who had reported the possible theft was the one who had been shot, police said.

As officers set up a perimeter, the suspect fired a second shot at an officer standing outside his patrol vehicle on French Avenue. Officers located the suspect and a short foot pursuit followed, with the suspect allegedly firing at least one shot at the pursuing officers.

The officers returned fire and the suspect was struck at least one time, police said.

Both the victim and suspect — the latter identified as 26-year-old Austin Wallace — were treated at the scene and, later, at an area hospital. Police confiscated Wallace’s firearm while he was being taken into custody.

No officers were injured during the incident. Both the victim and suspect were still recovering in hospital as of January 5.
