Sheriff’s Office: Colusa County shooting suspect also suspected of possessing child porn

The Colusa County Sheriff’s Office has announced the arrest of a primary suspect in a shooting that took place in Maxwell back in January.

24-year-old Martin Torres Mendez stands accused of firing at an inhabited dwelling on the 100 block of Oak Street on January 31, 2022, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The following month, investigators served a search warrant on the 400 block of North California Street in Maxwell, where they reportedly located three allegedly stolen guns, two of which had altered serial numbers, several bags of ammunition, and a mobile phone. Mendez was also arrested during the search.

A forensic examination of Mendez’s phone also turned up several images of suspected child pornography, the Sheriff’s Office said.

On March 30, investigators served additional search warrants at two different properties in Maxwell — one on the 400 block of North California Street and the other on the 400 block of Old Highway 99 — and confiscated a hard drive, two laptops, several USB devices, and multiple micro SD cards, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The investigation is ongoing.
