Investigation Implicates Man Suspected of Committing a Murder in July

OAKLAND — A months-long investigation has led to the arrest of a man implicated in a murder that occurred last July. The suspect was located and arrested by Oakland police in Fremont on February 10.

Latrail A. White, a 27-year-old resident of Fairfield, was taken into custody at 10:19 a.m., and later booked into Santa Rita Jail. White remains in custody ineligible for release on bond.

White allegedly shot to death Travis Ward, 48 of Oakland, on the morning of July 24th, near Garfield Park. Police were dispatched to investigate a report of a shooting victim shortly before 9:30 a.m.

Responding officers found Ward’s body lying on the pavement on 23rd Avenue, north of Foothill Boulevard. Despite efforts by paramedics to save him, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

White was identified as a suspect not long after this fatal shooting occurred. He was initially arrested on August 11th but released pending further investigation. On that day, he had an assault rifle inside his car and suspected stolen property in his possession.

Additional evidence subsequently linked White’s car to the fatal shooting, adjacent to the park and Garfield Elementary School.

White is scheduled to appear for a pretrial hearing on March 3rd. He faces multiple felony charges including murder and weapons-related charges, with criminal enhancements.

White is a previously convicted felon. He has prior arrests on his record in Solano and Mendocino counties involving assault, illicit drugs, robbery, and weapons.
