On Sunday, January 3, 2021, just after 1:00 am, officers from the Northeast Policing District responded to Maple Avenue just south of Shaw regarding two shooting victims. Officers arrived and located a 14-year-old female juvenile and a 15-year-old male juvenile suffering from gunshot wounds. Both juveniles were transported to local hospitals.

Despite lifesaving efforts from officers, EMS personnel, and hospital staff, 14-year-old, Breana Gomez was unfortunately
pronounced deceased. The 15-year-old male juvenile was listed in critical condition and survived his injuries.

Investigators learned that Gomez was leaving a house party in the area and was walking with a group of juvenile friends on Maple Avenue just before the shooting.

After a seven-month investigation, Homicide Detectives have arrested a seventeen-year-old male suspect for Breana Gomez’s
death. The juvenile’s mother, forty-two-year-old Maria Gonzalez of Fresno, was also arrested as an accessory to murder for her involvement after the fact. Both were arrested on Friday, August 6, 2021, and booked into the Fresno County Jail and Fresno County Juvenile Justice Campus.
