OAKLEY — A man with a history of violence and weapons violations was arrested following a struggle with Oakley police. The suspect was found in possession of a stolen car, a stolen firearm, and narcotics.

On July 18 at approximately 3:45 p.m., officers were dispatched to a warehouse on the 5500 block of Bridgehead Road. The warehouse has a recent history of thefts from vehicles parked in this industrial area.

The caller reported seeing a suspicious man peering inside vehicles. Responding officers located the suspect sitting inside a stolen car. A records check revealed the vehicle was reported stolen in San Leandro. A handgun found inside the car was reported stolen in Livermore.

Offices ordered the man to exit the vehicle. Instead of complying, he became combative and armed himself with a knife. He also began reaching around inside the vehicle, apparently searching for something.

In response, officers deployed Tasers and subdued the suspect. The man identified as 34-year-old Paul Muscat, a resident of Richmond, was taken into custody following a struggle with the police.

Muscat was arrested for multiple charges related to possession of illegal narcotics, burglary tools and stolen property. He was booked at the Martinez Detention Facility, after receiving medical treatment.

The stolen car was searched. Police determined the suspect was reaching for a handgun located inside the car. Additional evidence including narcotics were also recovered.

Muscat is no stranger to law enforcement. He is a convicted felon who among other offenses was previously arrested for an attempted murder.
