Hollister Police: Man hospitalized after committing grisly self-harm, assaulting family members

Hollister Police have announced the arrest of a man who allegedly attacked multiple family members and committed self-harm in front of responding officers.

Just before 1 PM on Saturday, October 17, officers responded to the 100 block of College Street, where 60-year-old Fernando Sanchez was reportedly attacking family members with a mallet, allegedly having struck a 17-year-old juvenile in the head multiple times when she tried to stop him from attacking her mother.

At some point, police say, Sanchez armed himself with a knife and continued the attack, but the family was able to barricade themselves in the house after he walked out to the backyard.

Officers arrived on scene and found Sanchez still in the backyard, stabbing himself in the chest and neck area. He was ordered to drop the knife but refused, continuing to stab himself.

Fearing that Sanchez was suicidal and might try to provoke officers into shooting him, officers kept their distance and, eventually, were able to subdue him with non-lethal projectiles similar to bean bags.

Sanchez was then successfully restrained so that first responders could render medical aid and stabilize his condition. Police say Sanchez was bleeding so profusely, however, that he had to be taken to a trauma hospital.

The 17-year-old juvenile was also hospitalized for treatment.

Sanchez is currently being held for medical evaluation and, once cleared, is expected to face charges of assault with a deadly weapon and domestic violence.
