Driver arrested for DUI after fatal collision

The Redding Police Department sadly reports on the arrest of a man respknsible for the death of a pedestrian –

“On June 17th, 2020 at approximately 10:53 P.M., Redding Police Officers responded to the area of State Route 273 at Breslauer Way in regards to a vehicle versus pedestrian collision. Upon arrival, Officers located a pedestrian along the west curb line who had sustained major injuries. The pedestrian was later transported to Mercy Medical Center by Ambulance.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as Stewart Helmer 63 years of Anderson, stated he was driving his SUV while pulling his boat south bound on State Route 273 in the right lane.

Helmer said he saw the pedestrian near the west fog line and swerved to avoid a collision. It was later determined Helmer’s boat struck the pedestrian. Helmer then pulled to the side of the road to check the welfare of the pedestrian and call 911.

Officers contacted Helmer and observed objective signs of intoxication. Helmer was ultimately arrested and transported to the Shasta County Jail where he was booked for DUI and vehicular man- slaughter. The pedestrian was transported to Mercy Hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.”
